What is a birth element?
Your birth element is the one of five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water — assigned to the exact day you were born in the Chinese five-element system. It describes what supports you, what drains you, and what restores your balance.
Most charts online assign an element by birth year, and Western astrology assigns one of four elements by birth month (your sun sign). Both are group labels. Your precise element is set by your exact birth date — two people born the same month, even the same year, can carry different elements. That's what this calculator computes.

What is my birth element?
Your birth element — your Born Element — is the element of your Day Master, the heavenly stem of the day you were born. It is one of five: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. You find it from your exact birth date, which is what the calculator above does.
How do I find my element by my birthday?
Enter the full date — year, month and day. A birthdate element cannot be worked out from the year alone or the month alone, because the day pillar advances on a sixty-day cycle that does not line up with either. Any tool that asks only for your birth year is giving you the year element, which is a different thing.
Is my birth element the same as my birth month element?
No. Your birth month carries its own element — the seasonal layer — and it is often different from your Born Element. Both are real, but only one of them describes you. See what element each birth month carries →
Is this the same as my zodiac sign?
