Your Born Element comes from the day pillar — the Day Master — and is calculated from your exact birth date. That one describes you. What element is my birth month?
Each birth month carries an element through its Earthly Branch: February and March are Wood, May and June are Fire, August and September are Metal, November and December are Water, and January, April, July and October are Earth. The month boundaries follow solar terms, not calendar months, so they fall around the 4th to 8th of each month rather than the 1st.
Is my birth month element the same as my Born Element?
No. Your birth month gives you the seasonal element — the climate you were born into. Your Born Element is your Day Master, calculated from your exact birth date. The month element describes the conditions; the Day Master describes you. They frequently differ.
Why do the months start around the 4th instead of the 1st?
Because the Chinese calendar divides the year by solar terms, which track the position of the sun rather than the Gregorian calendar. Each month begins at a specific solar term — and the year itself begins at Li Chun, around February 4, not on January 1 or at Lunar New Year.
I was born in early February. Which element applies?
That depends on whether you were born before or after Li Chun, which falls around February 4 and shifts by roughly a day between years. Born before it, you belong to the previous year Ox month, which is Earth. Born after it, you are in the Tiger month, which is Wood.
Two people born the same month — do they share an element?
They share the same month element, which is real but is only one layer. Their Day Masters are calculated from the exact day and can be any of the five elements, so two people born in the same month often carry entirely different Born Elements.
